This weekends conclusion! The Glassguns and The Strange Doors gigs.

So as promised a little round up of that weekend. Unfortunately I can't repeat reviews but you can check out the review I wrote for the Sound Control gig with The Glassguns here at Get Your Rock Out
It was definitely my kind of night, ace music all night with different variations of rock and roll, perfect really! Diverse crowd and age ranges which is always really nice to see. The night went on as it should have done...with alcohol undoubtedly leaving me extremely worse for wear for the following nights gig.
The Witchwood in Ashton-Under-Lyne is a great little venue often hosting tribute bands, all day gigs and punk gigs. The venue was pretty rammed for The Strange Doors gig; filled with people who remember The Doors and the younger who were brought up on the band. Everyone knows a song by The Doors if not a few regardless of them even knowing that the band actually wrote it, The Strange Doors split these classic songs up with less common songs making it special for real fans of The Doors. As expected you look around and see peoples faces judging what they hear, but, they were good. There is no replica of Jim Morrison, Manzarek, Densmore and Krieger but The Strange Doors were still a very worthy tribute to them.
The crowd danced and drank all of the way through which is really rare to see at a gig now, to see this music being played live today despite it being a tribute is still something quite special. Music is not written like that any more; it's rarely based on poetry, you never hear the bass being played on keys...well I have no words really, it was a special time for music and I don't see anything like that coming on the horizon again any time soon. I am glad tribute bands exist and I am really glad I got to see The Strange Doors after missing them at the end of last year. If you get the chance to see them it is a wonderful night out!

Gig weekend! The Glassguns and The Strange Doors Manchester.

So this weekend I have pretty much written off productivity wise. Friday 5th April is one hell of a gig at Sound Control in Manchester with bands from the city and Coventry putting on a night of rock and roll presented by Interlude. The Glassguns headline with Dirty Jesus, Piston and Hardtail as support, a review will be available on Get Your Rock Out shortly after I have recovered from the weekend. A bit of a pre-view of the headline act, you will see me post a lot about this band and it is well worth it.

The Glassguns were originally from Coventry shimmying their line up slightly moving Adam from bass to vocals and bringing in Nick as their bassist to join brothers Sam on guitar and Phil on drums. Despite residing in Manchester they are dedicated to playing shows back home and taking on any given opportunity. They have an E.P out called The Ugly Truth and you can view my review of this here. They put on an amazing show and every single musician knows their instrument inside out and aren't afraid to experiment with them at that. There are bands that I like and there are bands I like and I know are actually good and these guys are the latter. I respect people just supporting friends but as a regular writer I can't be disillusioned by that, I have to be an advocate for music in general..at least I am honest.
The Glassguns are running in the Red Bull competition to play at Download Festival this year where you can vote and create a buzz rating by liking and commenting on the voting page, if anyone likes them just a little bit goes and votes and does their part then it will make a huge difference. It would be really nice to see the back of some of the newer metalcore and get rock and roll back in as it is a genre that has stood the test of time. You can vote for them here.

Speaking of music that has stood the test of time I will be off to see The Strange Doors (a The Doors tribute) on Saturday. I love The Doors and I really hope these guys do them justice! But I have had my eye on them and they do keep getting booked which is always a good sign at first. This I can also update you on after the weekend. An exciting weekend ahead, a messy one at that. But I will post the links for everything below for you to broaden your musical horizons.

Iodine Sky -Summer Song and So Far Away song reviews

Manchester based four piece Iodine Sky are made up of Aaron Ward on vocals, Adam Galloway on drums, Marc Dawson on guitar and newest addition Matt Connell on guitar and they play a alternative rock/nu metal with strong audible influences from the likes of Incubus, Sevendust and Deftones. Explosive performers with a friendly intimate edge they are hitting the live music scene hard just three months in to the year already. Hearing about active musicians who go out of their way to better themselves is always a great thing and the fact that I was approached to review just two songs proves that this band just want to get out there and get heard on their way to being successful.
The first time I ever saw this band 'Summer Song' really stuck in my head; when a vocalist can powerfully push through long phrases like in the chorus of this song then it definitely does stick with you. The song starts gently and builds up gradually before powering through the chorus. 'Summer Song' is packed with vocal harmonies particularly in the chorus before the bridge; it is a repetitive and therefore catchy song and is set apart from other tracks by Iodine Sky.
In contrast to Summer Song there is 'So Far Away,' a much heavier track with extremely powerful vocals, double pedal a grinding guitar riffs. This track is no less catchy than the previous however, it is equally as contagious and will be playing in your mind over and over again. Both tracks have truthful, story like lyrics and paint the pictures intended. The band show off their individual skills in all of their tracks making a mixture of music that is different to a lot on the scene today.

As It Is, Running With Lions, Nightlife, Miss Vincent, Washington Reed 19/02/201 at FAC251 Manchester

So I didn't even know that they put on gigs at Factory until this gig cropped up and it is in fact a great little venue to have gigs at! Most of the crowd in the venue were in their teens all waiting for YouTube sensation Patty Walters to take the stage with As It Is. The nice thing about young crowds is that they support everybody, they appreciate everyone coming on to the stage and are very easily enthused.
First band of the evening were Washington Reed, a two piece blues band local to Manchester and it was a beautiful way to open up the evening. They were refreshing and talented and I very much hope to see some more of them in the future, as an avid rock and roll fan blues was an amazing thing to hear.
(If anyone has any information on the second band then please hit me up! Can't find them online or anything.)
Third up were four piece punk rock band Miss Vincent from the South, the most energetic performance of the evening with massive crowd interaction. Lead singer and guitarist Alex running through the crowd, making people feel as uncomfortable as he could and sure enough the crowd did not forget them due to the attention they received after their performance. A tight set with no glitches and possibly a little bit too far down the bill for that kind of performance.
Next up were Nightlife another refreshing rock band with interesting experimental sections in their music; vocalist Paul struggling through losing his voice (too much partying the night before) but quite frankly sounded amazing. Highly energetic and professional performers it was a privilege to watch them.
The second to last act were another local band Running With Lions, female fronted rock band with a big voice. Very shy on stage for being a main support act but they definitely fit with the crowd that As It Is had pulled in. The final act As It Is were the band that everyone was waiting for, playing a well rehearsed and powerful set that excited the crowd. They may have jumped on the bandwagon with what is popular music to teenagers these days but it definitely works; all night the band were inundated with people wanting photographs and buying merchandise.
It felt like a long night, it's been a while since I have been to a gig so early and with such a full line up but there was a great variety of music and it was amazing to see such a young crowd appreciating so much music and staying entertained the whole night. The rest of us get irritated with kids around but really, they're the ones giving the most support, showing appreciation and buying the merchandise so the rest of us should probably give them less stick. Also with 14+ gigs you have to get ID'd at the bar so it feels quite nice too.
Go and check out all of the links, photographs and videos for this gig (they're only iPhone images but it's better than nothing) and hit them up on Facebook etc.
